Iceland is a magical place. We may be a little biased…it was our first international trip together and where we went for our honeymoon (along with our maid of honor and her husband!). This little island nation continues to be a popular tourist spot, and it’s not hard to see why. With so many beautiful spots, the friendliest locals and amazing activities, Iceland has something for everyone.
Here are 6 things we love about Iceland:

Waterfalls
There are SO many waterfalls in Iceland. Estimates state there could be over 10,000 of them. From the most powerful (Detifoss) to the highest (Morsárfoss), each one is unique. Many of the popular waterfalls are easily accessible around the Ring Road and some are within 1 or 2 hours from Reykjavik if you’re short on time.

Rainbows
“Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.” (Wizard of Oz/Yip Harburg)
As with many island nations, there is no shortage of rainbows in Iceland (at least in our experience). The first two days of our road trip we were so excited to see them. After that we started to take them for granted. They add a little extra something special to the already amazing landscapes.

Adventures
From unique “You can only do it here” to “I’ve done this before, but it’s still cool because it’s in Iceland”. Some of the activities we chose during our trip were: snorkeling at Silfra in Thingvellir National Park, a glacier hike in Vatnajökull National Park, and whitewater rafting near Akureyri. We use Viator to book these types of activities and more.

Culture
Interesting history and folklore are everywhere. Viking sagas detail the history of early settlers and raids throughout Europe. Stories of trolls, fairies, and elves will have you questioning if these mythical creatures are real or not. Icelanders will tell you there is no question (they are). Traditions that have lasted generations like gifting books the night before Christmas and the unique way last names are assigned.

Unique Geography
Landscapes of volcanoes and glaciers will make you feel like you’ve left the planet. Get ready to soak in hot springs to relax and rejuvenate but don’t be surprised by the sulfur smell. It’s a small price to pay for the experience.

Wildlife
Horses, puffins, whales, and sheep oh my! While you can see these creatures in other parts of the world, it’s fun to see them in Iceland. Icelandic horses look more like ponies due to their smaller stature. You can find riding tours and will likely see them being herded alongside the road. Sheep roam free and graze on the green grasses. If you’re there in September, check out Réttir, an annual festival where sheep are rounded up before winter. Around the coast and on the water check out the adorable puffins and whales.
There’s so much to love about Iceland. We’ve barely scratched the surface and can’t wait to explore more in the future. Looking for more information about the land of fire and ice?
